Chronic Disease Epidemiologist

POSITION PURPOSE and RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will provide epidemiologic expertise, consultation and technical support to the chronic disease (tobacco, nutrition, physical activity, oral health, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke) and Maternal Child Health (infant and child mortality and newborn screening) programs in the Department of Health.

Duties will include: translating data/findings into prevention and control recommendations to ensure the appropriate public health measures are adopted. providing support and coordination with other agencies, schools, health care systems, communities, etc., to conduct chronic disease surveillance according to nationally developed standards. serves as liaison with the public health community to ensure collaboration and coordination on chronic disease and MCH data, and epidemiologic issues, assisting in evaluation, collection, interpretation and utilization of health information, data, and statistics to support department planning, priority setting and policy making.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • principles of epidemiologic studies;
  • database management such as SAS and Epi Info;
  • core functions of pubic health;
  • structure of public health systems;
  • chronic disease and maternal and child health populations;
  • data analysis methods;
  • computer use including Microsoft software applications;
  • serve as contributing member of the Office of Health Promotion and Maternal Child Health programs.
  • communicate chronic disease risk and interventions to scientific and lay audiences;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely in writing and orally;
  • work in multi-disciplinary teams;
  • document, gather, interpret and report program data information;
  • maintain good working relations with co-workers, agencies, boards and the public;
  • affectively organize an aggressive workload;
  • plan, schedule, and manage multiple tasks;
  • make public presentations and lead workshop groups;
  • make timely decisions;
  • train and provide guidance to chronic disease and MCH staff

Comments:  A minimum of a Master's Degree in public health or related field and at least three years of experience in epidemiology and/or data analysis.
