The results from the survey which members and health professionals completed in March 2009 are available. This survey was sponsored by the SD Department of Health and SDPHA and facilitated by Texas A&M School of Public Health.
To the right is a series of graphs detailing education level, years worked in public health, continuing education and age of the workforce. The full set of graphs and the results of the survey are also provided as a downloadable PDFs.
The data shows information that will not come as surprise to you as public health professionals but the results substantiate our need for more education and opportunities for career and skill advancement.
Noted:
1. The need for a School of Public Health for professionals to acquire a Masters in Public Health and/or PhD.
Young professionals shouldn't have to leave the state to further their education in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. We need to keep them here to fill the gap the retiring workforce will leave.
2. 23% of the public health workforce is between the ages of 55 to 64 and 32% are ages 45 to 54.

The underlined bulleted areas is the core curriculum of a Masters in Public Health. The other elements are areas that are learned on the job and through leadership institutes and continuing education.
